Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Answer Lady
What are the rules on public displays of affection? Our friend and her new boyfriend are constantly pawing each other when we’re all out and it’s getting annoying. – Third, Fourth and Fifth Wheels
Ah, the PDA – just one of many occupational hazards of having to live amongst other human beings. Even so, certain common sense guidelines should apply here. Cape May in the summer is a petri dish of tourists and locals alike lulled by the sensuous sun, sea, and the general I’m-on-vacation-I-can-do-whatever vibe. Throw in a couple of umbrella drinks and the fact that everyone’s half-dressed, and the next thing you know there are lips, hands and tongues everywhere.
The Answer Lady is not saying that whilst in Cape May one must break out the chastity belt. On the contrary, if your heart doesn’t melt at the sight of an older couple holding hands strolling along the beach, then you have no sense of romance. But general consideration for those around you should prevail against the potential perils of passion. Hand-holding, a brief kiss, a gentleman’s hand at the small of a lady’s back – these things are perfectly acceptable in public spaces. Tongue gymnastics, wildly roaming hands, and any form of smacking, grunting or sighing are not acceptable. Since the offenders in question are your friends, you are within your rights to suggest they ‘get a room.’ Or perhaps since we’re in Cape May, ‘get a B&B’ would be more accurate.

I haven’t been to Cape May in several years and am looking forward to a visit soon. Do I really have to drive to Rio Grande to see a movie? – Movie Buff
Don’t be silly, young man! You’ve got two options right here in Cape May. On Wednesdays, bring the kids for Family Dinner & A Movie at Congress Hall. Adults pay $29.95, kids $12.95 for a fabulous dinner and dessert buffet, followed by a family-friendly movie on the lawn. Or just do dessert and the movie for an insanely low $10. And the only thing cheaper than that is ‘free,’ which is the cost of Movies on the Beach on Thursday nights, behind Convention Hall. Who needs those sticky movie theater chairs when you can sprawl on the sand or the grass instead? Pass the popcorn, please.
