An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort… by Meghan Kunz
ONE of the most challenging obstacles while house-hunting is arriving in Cape May with an agenda in place, and then being tempted and lured into the shops and eateries. A few crab cakes and a sack of T-shirts later, the mind regains focus…that’s right, we’re here for the house. Another challenge is the commute, which presents an issue when you think you just want to drive past that house you liked one more time — but the house is three hours away, and you have that pesky job. All of these impediments are worth it in the end, when you land yourself the ideal retreat, second home, vacation house, retirement pad, or whatever fancy name you call it. If it’s in the Cape May area, it was worth the challenge.
Looking for real estate is no easy task, but it’s compounded by everyone who wants to give you their opinion. Believe it or not, this group is quite vast. Unfortunately, upon opening the door to the real estate discussion, you then will witness some people bristle when they learn of an area you plan to look in — “What?! You’re not going to live on the beach?!” No, because as hard as it is to believe, some people enjoy living near the water, but not physically on the water. You don’t need to literally live in town to revel in all of the events and nuances that comprise its beauty. Cape May County itself is actually home to fabulous townships which are a short drive away from the beloved Exit Zero, all of which have a beauty of their own. I also find myself shaking my head and thinking about the three-hour commute it takes to drive to Cape May — if I can reduce that journey to a 20-25 minute drive? That’s no compromise; that’s absolute bliss. I’ll take that in a heartbeat.
I’d like to give a heartfelt thank you to Avondale-by-the-Sea, located at the corner of Beach and Gurney. I’ve been staying there for years, and I’ve had nothing but pleasant experiences. With the owner always on site to ensure a smooth operation, you can feel confident that if you have any issue, it will be handled in a timely manner. We made last-minute reservations this month, and were able to secure a room on Columbus Day weekend for a very reasonable rate, especially considering the breathtaking ocean view and our prime location directly across from the beach. The staff is also a joy to be around, always welcoming and helpful, especially Heather, who’s been with Avondale as long as I’ve been staying there.
Until next time… embrace every challenge. Here’s to house-hunting and Halloween!
