Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Answer Lady
I broke up with my boyfriend last month. It was the right decision and I am moving on, but it occurs to me that the holidays are right around the corner and I’m alone. I know he’s not the guy for me, but would it be so wrong to get back together with him just for a couple of months? PS: This is not about gifts! I’m thinking family dinners, office parties, etc. Nobody wants to deal with that stuff on their own. – Lonely Girl
The Answer Lady finds your declaration that this is “not about gifts” somewhat suspect. Assuming you speak the truth, however, it’s simply not fair to reel this poor guy back in just so you don’t have to make small talk at the Thanksgiving table with Aunt Barbara. The very fact that you have work festivities to attend and family members you are trying to avoid indicates that you are not, in fact, “lonely.” Yes, sometimes it’s awkward to walk into a party alone; on the other hand, there is a certain freedom involved in it, too. You have no agenda but your own. No fighting over whether you visit his family or yours on the major holidays! No standing around when it’s time to head home, waiting while he has “one more cocktail” with Cousin Phil! If your ex is truly on your mind this season, send him a Christmas card and see what happens. Otherwise, leave him off the hook, enjoy your freedom, hang around the mistletoe and see who shows up.
Dear Answer Lady
My husband and I bought a condo in Cape May last spring – we live in New York, and we get down here whenever we can. We invited our Big Apple neighbors to visit over the summer. They fell in love with the place and you guessed it – now they want to buy a condo of their own, in our building! They’re lovely people, but this is our getaway! Any advice? – Must you be my neighbor?
Holy cow – if you like these people enough to cross state lines with them, what difference does it make if they live down the hall? Neighbors are a series of random people in our lives whom we may not necessarily choose, but we’re kind of stuck with them, so if you happen to like yours, that’s half the battle. The Answer Lady’s advice is to get over to Cape May Linen Outlet and buy them a housewarming gift.
