Why Should I Go? The Mug isn’t just a bar and restaurant that’s been around for over half a century; it’s a local legend. From the ceiling hang mugs that are set to sea when their respective, Mug-loving owners pass on. Then there’s the famous Froth-Blowing Contest that’s been held since 1954. Whoever blows the most froth out of the glass wins a trophy — and, of course, serious bragging rights.
The Mug is not only a fine bar — it’s a full-service restaurant, too, offering a selection of appetizers, sandwiches and entrées which you may enjoy in one of two rooms, or on an ideal people-watching patio.
Terrible Tuesdays, which aren’t really terrible at all, are one way to liven up your weekday. Clear your throat and sing (make that shout) Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” with your fellow patrons, as two sides of the bar try to outdo each other in this quirky contest.
Insider Tip: Get your groove on. Of the bands who have graced the Ugly Mug stage, many have comprised local talent. Others started out that way, but have grown to be more like national talent. The Cape May natives who make up 7Mornings are based in Hoboken, and have traveled as far as California working on their record, which is being produced by the same gentleman who produced The Fray. But 7Mornings still makes it a point to play the Mug as often as possible; it’s one of their favorite venues.
