Why Should I Go? When Toby and Rona Craig, both educators, decided to move to Cape May to open a restaurant with very little experience, people called them crazy. Fortunately for Cape May, this only made them more determined. They packed up the life they’d built in Delaware, purchased the converted plantation home that is the Washington Inn, and moved upstairs with their three young children.
What started as a simple tea room serving dinner between 5pm and 8pm became one of Cape May’s finest fine dining destinations. Guests come not only for the highly-acclaimed food, but to eat at a cozy fireside table, or on one of the restaurant’s airy summer patios.
And then there’s the wine. There are more than 10,000 bottles to choose from, all of them hand-selected by Michael Craig, making it the largest wine cellar in South Jersey. If you have trouble choosing, ask the sommelier for direction. Or seek out Marty Santry, who is everything an old-fashioned bartender should be. To top it off, The Washington Inn is now home to a wine bar serving wine tasting flights, wines by the glass, and a small plates menu.
If a cocktail is more your speed, try one made with beach plums grown by the Craigs at their Cape May Winery (see page 219.)
